Abul Ala Maududi
Abul Ala Maududi (Urdu: ابو الاعلیٰ المودودی, romanized: Abū al-Aʿlā al-Mawdūdī; 25 September 1903 – 22 September 1979) was a renowned Islamic scholar, thinker, and leader in the modern Islamic movement. Active in British India and later in Pakistan after its partition, Abul Ala Maududi was an Islamist ideologue, philosopher, jurist, historian, journalist, and activist.
Praised by scholars like Wilfred Cantwell Smith as "the most systematic thinker of modern Islam," Abul Ala Maududi authored extensive works in Urdu, covering Qur'anic exegesis (Tafsir), Hadith, Islamic law, philosophy, and history. His writings have been widely translated into English, Arabic, Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Burmese, Malayalam, and many other languages, significantly influencing Islamic thought globally.
Abul Ala Maududi's vision was to revive Islamic principles and propagate what he deemed "true Islam." He emphasized the integration of Sharia into governance, aiming to restore Islamic culture to its essence during the era of the Rashidun Caliphs. He actively opposed secularism, nationalism, and socialism, which he viewed as threats influenced by Western imperialism.
The legacy of Abul Ala Maududi continues to inspire millions through his groundbreaking ideas on Islam's role in politics, society, and personal life. His works remain a cornerstone for those seeking to understand Islamic philosophy and its relevance in the modern world.
